Out of the Shadows: Redefining Treatment for Neurodivergent & LGBTQIA+ Young Adults

autism and ADHD mental health • Written by: Cornerstones of Maine

This is the unfortunate truth. Most mental health programs weren’t designed with you in mind. If you’re neurodivergent or gender expansive, you’ve probably sat in a therapy room and thought, They’re not talking to me. Not really.

So you mask and after a while, even the most “inclusive” programs start to feel like shapewear. Tight, exhausting, and made for someone else's body.

Cornerstones of Maine is seeking to change that. Their Rubedo track was built from the ground up for young adults who are done editing themselves to feel safe. It’s not about helping you “fit in.” It’s about building a treatment experience that finally fits you.

Rubedo: Not Another Buzzword

The term rubedo comes from alchemy. It is the final stage of transformation, when chaos gives way to clarity, when a person begins to integrate all their parts, even the messy ones.

That’s the north star for Cornerstones’ Rubedo program, a specialized clinical path for neurodivergent young adults, many of whom also identify as LGBTQIA+.

Autism, ADHD, OCD, sensory processing differences, learning disorders - whatever the label, this track is for people whose internal experiences don’t fit neatly into the neurotypical mainstream.

This is a program not meant to round off your edges. It’s meant to get curious. Explore how your brain works, how your body moves through the world, and how your identity has shaped your sense of safety. And then, slowly, steadily, figuring out how to build a life around that. A life without shame.

Shame: The Uninvited Guest

Shame is a subtle, powerful foe. Through language, through silence, through being misunderstood, misgendered, and misidentified again and again, shame seeps in until you start to believe the problem is you.

Rubedo holds no space for shame. It’s not a place where you’re asked to change who you are in order to be treated with respect. It’s a place where the full range of your identity is expected, welcomed, and woven into the clinical work—not treated like an obstacle.

Gender-Affirming, Not Just Gender-Tolerant

A lot of programs claim to be “inclusive.” Fewer can explain what that actually looks like in practice.

Rubedo’s aim is to go beyond platitudes. Gender identity isn’t a side note—it’s central to understanding mental health, safety, and relational dynamics. Gender-expansive clients aren’t tasked with educating staff or having to explain themselves over and over again. The infrastructure is already in place.

There’s nothing performative here. Just a deep, unapologetic commitment to treating the whole person.

Therapy Without the Costume

Maybe you’ve tried therapy before and left feeling like you had to perform insight to be taken seriously. Maybe you’ve felt like your queerness, your autism, your ADHD, your trauma—were all competing for airtime. Maybe you’ve never felt like there was a program where you could bring all of it at once.

Rubedo is that program.

It’s where a clinician doesn’t flinch when you say you’re nonbinary and questioning your body. It’s where someone notices that you’ve gone nonverbal—not because you’re being “defiant,” but because your nervous system is maxed out. It’s where a roommate asks what your special interest is, and actually means it.

It’s therapy without the costume. It’s healing without the performance.

Out of the Shadows, Into the Room

Cornerstones of Maine’s Rubedo track lifts voices that were never meant to stay quiet. For the young adult who’s been mislabeled, misdiagnosed, or simply missed entirely—this is a space to be fully known. Not in fragments. Not in translation. But in totality.

We lift our voices not just for ourselves, but for those who haven’t found theirs yet. If you'd like to learn more about Rubedo or how Cornerstones can help you find your voice, give us a call. We’d love to hear from you.
